Sung-Kee Chung, Ph.D.

  Dr. Chung is currently Professor of Chemistry at Pohang University of Science & Technology (Postech), a Guest Professor at the University of Science & Technology of China, and Academic Advisory Council member of Petronas University of Technology in Malaysia. His previous leadership roles include the President of Postech, Chairman of the Association of East Asian Research Universities. He served as board member of several insitutions including Korea Institute of S & T Evaluation and Planning, Samsung Scholarship Foundation, and Korean Chemical Society.

  Dr. Chung received the graduate training at the University of Illinois-Urbana obtaining a Ph.D in chemistry. After various research and teaching appointments from 1972 to 1987 at Yale University in New Haven, Texas A&M University in College Station, and SmithKline & French Laboratories in Philadelphia, he returned to Korea as a founding faculty member of Postech, where he subsequently served as Department Heads (Chemistry and Life Sciences), Dean of Academic Affairs and several other appointments including Directors of Institute for Applied Bioorganic Research and Basic Science Research Institute. He was visiting professor at Oxford University and ETH-Zurich, and served as the Editor of Korean Journal of Medicinal Chemistry for 6 years, and was elected member of Korean Academy of Science & Technology.

  Dr. Chung's research interests cover natural products (structure and biosynthesis), bioorganic chemistry (mechanism and synthesis), medicinal chemistry (anti-infectives and anti-cancers) and most recently molecular transporters as drug delivery vehicle, especially for brain diseases and gene therapy. He has published more than 160 refereed papers, 30 proceedings papers, 18 patents and 1 monograph, "Inositol Phosphates: Chemical and Physiological Properties."
